This is one of the most common questions I receive in my consultation room — and on Instagram (@dr.shreyarajkumar). The answer is genuinely ‘it depends’ — but let me give you a framework that makes the decision straightforward.
What Is Composite Bonding?
Composite bonding involves applying a tooth-coloured resin directly to the tooth surface, shaping it by hand, and setting it with a curing light. The entire process happens chairside in a single visit. No moulds sent to a lab, no temporary veneers, no waiting.
It is ideal for: minor chips, small gaps between teeth, slightly uneven edges, one or two teeth that look shorter than they should, mild discolouration on a single tooth.
What Are Porcelain Veneers?
Veneers are custom-made wafer-thin shells of dental porcelain fabricated by a dental technician, then bonded to the front surface of your prepared teeth. The process requires two appointments: preparation and impression-taking, then bonding the finished veneers.
They are ideal for: significant colour change (teeth that don’t respond to whitening), reshaping multiple teeth simultaneously, creating a fully harmonious smile design, patients who want the longest-lasting cosmetic result.
The Honest Comparison
| Factor | Composite Bonding | Porcelain Veneers |
| Cost per tooth | AED 600–1,200 | AED 1,500–2,500 |
| Appointments | 1 visit | 2–3 visits |
| Lifespan | 5–7 years | 10–15 years |
| Stain resistance | Moderate | Excellent |
| Best for | Minor fixes | Full smile redesign |
| Reversibility | Yes, fully reversible | Requires enamel prep |
My Clinical Recommendation
Choose composite bonding if: you have one or two specific imperfections, you want immediate results on a smaller budget, or you are not yet ready to commit to a permanent treatment.
Choose porcelain veneers if: you want to transform multiple teeth at once, the change involves significant colour or shape redesign, or you want the most durable, stain-resistant long-term result.
Many of my patients at Sofia Smile Clinic start with composite bonding on one or two teeth, love the result, and return for a fuller porcelain makeover when they are ready.
